The Oklahoma City Barons were an American ice hockey franchise based in Oklahoma City , Oklahoma . It played in the American Hockey League from 2010 to 2015 .

history

The NHL - franchise the Edmonton Oilers announced in February 2010 that the license for its farm team , the Edmonton Road Runners of the American Hockey League picks up after five years of inactivity. This was relocated to Oklahoma City , Oklahoma , where it has been participating in the AHL game operations under the name Oklahoma City Barons since the 2010/11 season . The team name was chosen by the fans themselves in a competition. Oklahoma filled the void left by the financial disbandment of the CHL team Oklahoma City Blazers in 2009. The reason for this was the rent in the Ford Center that was too high for a CHL team . To get around this problem, the Edmonton Oilers chose the modernized Cox Convention Center as their home ground.

In December 2014, the Oklahoma City Barons announced that they would cease their gaming operations at the end of the 2014/15 season. In January 2015, the American Hockey League announced an extensive restructuring for the 2015/16 season , as part of which a new Pacific Division was established and five teams relocated to California . This also affected the Oklahoma City Barons, who henceforth operate as Bakersfield Condors . The ECHL franchise of the same name was renamed Norfolk Admirals .
