The Utica Devils were an American ice hockey franchise of the American Hockey League based in Utica , New York . The venue for the Devils was the Utica Memorial Auditorium .

history

The Utica Devils were in 1987 as American Hockey League - the farm team of the New Jersey Devils of the National Hockey League was founded. They replaced the Mohawk Valley Comets from the dissolved Atlantic Coast Hockey League in Utica . The best regular season result in the franchise's six-year history was 92 points in the 1989/90 season. Although Utica reached the playoffs four times in the six years, the team always failed in the first playoff round. In 1993, the team was acquired by the Calgary Flames , who relocated it to Saint John , New Brunswick , where it played as their farm team under the name Saint John Flames in the AHL.

The void left by the Utica Devils was filled by the Utica Bulldogs , who played in the Colonial Hockey League in the 1993/94 season .
