history
After already operating under the name Peoria Rivermen in the International Hockey League from 1984 to 1996 and in the ECHL from 1996 to 2005 , the AHL team of the Worcester IceCats was relocated to Peoria in 2005 . As the successor to the Springfield Indians (founded in 1926) and the IceCats, the Rivermen are the oldest still existing franchise in the minor leagues. After the NHL teams of the Montréal Canadiens , the Toronto Maple Leafs and the Boston Bruins , they are the fourth oldest ice hockey franchise in North America.
In the first year of their membership in the AHL they reached the play-offs clearly , but were eliminated in the first round.
