The Providence Reds (later Rhode Island Reds ) were an American ice hockey franchise of the American Hockey League from Providence , Rhode Island . The Reds' venues were the Rhode Island Auditorium and the Providence Civic Center . The franchise was named after the Rhode Island Red , a domestic chicken bred in the region .
history
The Providence Reds, which were founded in 1926, were a founding member of the Canadian-American Hockey League in the same year , in which they were active for the following ten years until their dissolution. Subsequently, Providence was first included in the newly created International-American Hockey League in 1936 and finally in 1940 in the American Hockey League , in which the team played until its dissolution.
The franchise won the prestigious Calder Cup a total of four times . First against the Syracuse Stars in 1938 , against the Pittsburgh Hornets in 1940 , against the Hershey Bears in 1949 and finally against the Cleveland Barons in 1956 . The team also made it to the finals in 1952, 1971 and 1974.
In the 1976/77 season, the team name was changed to Rhode Island Reds, which the team only wore for one season, as the team was acquired after the season by the Broome Dusters from the North American Hockey League , which was dissolved in 1977, and after Binghamton , New York , where it played as Binghamton Dusters in the AHL.
