The Utah Grizzlies were an ice hockey team in the International Hockey League and the American Hockey League that was based in West Valley City at the E Center .
history
Salt Lake City was home to the Salt Lake Golden Eagles between 1984 and 1994 , who played in the IHL and moved to Detroit in 1994. The Utah Grizzlies emerged from the Denver Grizzlies' move to Salt Lake City. This change of location was made necessary by the move of the Québec Nordiques to Colorado , which have been playing as Colorado Avalanche in Denver since 1995 .
In the first year of the franchise's existence, the Grizzlies won the Turner Cup , the IHL championship cup . Even after moving to Denver, the team's success continued. In the playoff final, the Grizzlies defeated the Orlando Solar Bears 4-0 to win the 1995/96 Turner Cup. The fourth game of the best-of-seven series was played in the Delta Center , where 17,381 spectators saw the Grizzlies win the title, setting a record attendance for minor league ice hockey games.
After the dissolution of the IHL in 2001, the Grizzlies were included in the AHL, but could not build on the successes in the IHL. For the 2005/06 season, the management of the Grizzlies requested the voluntary withdrawal of the team from the AHL in order to find a new owner for the franchise. In March 2006, Dan Gilbert , the new owner of the franchise who also owns the Cleveland Cavaliers NBA franchise , announced his plans for the Grizzlies to move to Cleveland . The Cleveland Barons played in Cleveland until 2006 . Under the new name Lake Erie Monsters , the former Grizzlies tackled the 2007/08 AHL season .
