The city of West Valley City in Salt Lake County in the US - state of Utah has about 140,000 inhabitants (estimate 2016 US Census Bureau ), the second largest city in Utah. The city did not emerge until 1980 from the places Hunter, Granger and Chesterfield, which had merged as suburbs of Salt Lake City in the 1970s .

Sports
The city is home to an ice hockey team called Utah Grizzlies , which has been active in the ECHL since 2005 , after a team of the same name , playing in Salt Lake City , changed the league and location from the AHL in 2005 .
