Salt Lake County [ ˌsɔːlt leɪk ˈkaʊntɪ ] is a county in the state of Utah , which surrounds the region around the state capital Salt Lake City south of the Great Salt Lake . The county seat is Salt Lake City, which is also the capital of Utah.

Salt Lake County has an area of 2092 km², of which 1910 km² is land and 182 km² is water. It is bordered clockwise by the counties: Morgan County , Summit County , Wasatch County , Utah County , Tooele County, and Davis County .
history
Salt Lake County was founded in 1852 and got its name from the Great Salt Lake . It was settled by Mormon pioneers in 1847. Brigham Young, the leader of the settlers, declared, "This is the right place" after seeing the valley with its wide green spaces.

Salt Lake County had a population of 898,387 people as of the 2000 census . There were 295,141 households and 213,977 families. The population density was 470 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 86.34% White, 1.06% African American, 0.88% Native American, 2.56% Asian, 1.23% Pacific Islander, and 5.36% other races Groups; 2.57% were from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 11.89% of the population.
Of the 295,141 households, 40.10% had children and adolescents under the age of 18 living with them. 57.80% were married couples living together, 10.40% were single mothers. 27.50% were not families. 20.80% are single households and 6.20% have someone living there who is 65 years of age or over. The average household size was 3.00 and the average family size was 3.53 people.
For the entire county, the population was composed of 30.50% of residents under the age of 18, 12.90% between 18 and 24 years of age, 30.60% between 25 and 44 years of age, and 18.00% between 45 and 64 years of age 8.10% were 65 years of age or over. The median age was 29 years. For every 100 females there were 101.70 males, for every 100 females aged 18 and over there were 99.70 males.
The median income for a household in the county is $ 48,373 , and the median income for a family is $ 54,470. Males had a median income of $ 36,953 versus $ 26,105 for females. The per capita income was $ 20,190. 8.00% of the population and 5.70% of families are below the poverty line. 9.00% of these were under 18 years of age and 5.50% were 65 years of age or older.
