Wayne County is a county in the state of Utah in the United States . The county seat is Loa . The county is one of the most sparsely populated regions of the United States outside of Alaska, which is primarily due to the desert and semi-desert character of large parts of the area.

Wayne County covers an area of 6,388 square kilometers, 16 square kilometers of which is water. It is bordered clockwise by the counties: Emery County , San Juan County , Garfield County , Piute County, and Sevier County .
The Green River forms the eastern border of San Juan County . Other rivers are the Dirty Devil River and its tributary Fremont River . Thousand Lake Mountains is in the northwestern part. This area is mainly used for farming, horse riding, fishing, hiking and hunting.
In the county are called The Maze part of Canyonlands National Park , parts of the Glen Canyon National Recreation Area and Capitol Reef National Park . Parts of the Dixie National Forest and the Fishlake National Forest are also in the area.
history
Wayne County was founded in 1892. The origin of the name is not exactly clear. There are two familiar naming options; after Wayne Robinson or General Anthony Wayne in the American Revolutionary War (1755–1783).

There are no major roads in the county. The Utah State Route 24 opens up the western half of its branches, the Utah State Route 12 and Utah State Route 95 to the south. The east is not accessible by roads and is largely only accessible by four-wheel drive vehicles.

Wayne County had a population of 2,509 people as of the 2000 census . There were 890 households and 669 families. The population density was less than 1 person per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 97.29% White, 0.16% African American, 0.36% Native American, 0.08% Asian, 0.16% Pacific Islander, and 1.24% other races Groups; 0.72% were from two or more races. 1.99% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 890 households, 36.20% had children and adolescents under the age of 18 living with them. 66.50% were married couples living together, 5.30% were single mothers. 24.80% were not families. 21.50% were single households and 9.60% had someone living there who was 65 years of age or over. The average household size was 2.81 and the average family size was 3.31 people.
For the entire county, the population was composed of 32.40% residents under 18 years of age, 8.10% between 18 and 24 years of age, 22.50% between 25 and 44 years of age, 22.60% between 45 and 64 years of age 14.40% were 65 years of age or over. The median age was 34 years. For every 100 females there were 103.50 males, and for every 100 females aged 18 and over there were 103.50 males.
The median income for a household was 32,000 USD , and the median income for a family was 36,940 USD. Males had a median income of $ 26,645 versus $ 20,000 for women. The per capita income was $ 15,392. 15.40% of the population and 12.70% of families are below the poverty line. 22.10% of these were under 18 years of age and 8.20% were 65 years of age or older.
