The Utah State Route 24 - also known under the name Capitol Reef Scenic Byway - is a highway in the US state of Utah . About one kilometer west of the center of the city of Salina , State Route 24 initially branches off in a south-westerly direction from US Highway 50 and runs through the valley of the Sevier River to the junction with Interstate 70 together with US Highway 89 . It branches off to the left of State Route 118 into the Plateau Valley and now runs south towards the valley of Otter Creek . The small Koosharem Paiute Indian Reservation at the reservoir of the same name is crossed near the confluence of State Route 62 . On the border between the Piute and Wayne County , the highest altitude in the course of the route is reached in an unnamed pass with 2556  m . From here the direction of the route changes, which now follows the fertile valley of the Fremont River in an easterly direction . In the course of the next 28 kilometers (18 miles) the villages Loa , Lyman , Bicknell and Torrey are traversed, shortly before reaching Capitol Reef National Park , State Route 12 joins . In Hanksville , where State Route 95 joins, State Route 24 turns northeast and crosses the Dirty Devil River shortly after the Fremont River and Muddy Creek meet , before crossing the San Rafael Desert east of Goblin Valley State Park . Shortly after crossing the San Rafael River , State Route 24 ends 21 kilometers (13 miles) west of Green River on Interstate 70.
