Hanksville is a small town in eastern Wayne County , Utah. It is located on the Colorado Plateau in the vicinity of the San Rafael Swell , a geological fold that rises out of the semi-desert as a bizarre rock ridge.

geography

Hanksville is located on the junction of Utah State Route 24 and Utah State Route 95 , south of the confluence of the Fremont River and Muddy Creek . Both form the Dirty Devil River , which flows into the Colorado River .

history

The place was founded in 1882 under the name Grave's Valley . The name Hanksville was given to the place in 1885. It was named after the Mormon pioneer Ebenezer Hanks. Hanksville later became known as a supply station for Butch Cassidy and his gang.

After the Second World War, prospecting for uranium developed in the region , with the result that a large number of small and very small mines were built, almost all of which were abandoned within a short time. Hanksville served to supply the farms. In 1960 the first power line came to Hanksville. Since then, tourism , on which the place lives today, has also developed. Hanksville provides lodging and shopping for visitors to national parks and other areas in the northwestern Colorado Plateau. The Bureau of Land Management operates a field station in Hanksville.

The Mars Desert Research Station was built in 2001 about 12 km northwest of Hanksville.
