Draper is a city in the US state of Utah with 42,274 inhabitants (as of 2010). It is located about 30 km south of Salt Lake City in the southeast of the valley of the Great Salt Lake on the slopes of the Transverse Range , a foothill of the Wasatch Mountains . The vast majority of the city is in Salt Lake County , only a small portion extends south over the ridge of the Transverse Range into Utah County . Draper is now a suburb of Salt Lake City and is part of its metropolitan area .

Draper is best known for Utah State Prison , the central Utah detention center and home of the State Department of Corrections law enforcement agency . It is the only prison in the state that carries out executions. It was here in 1977 that the murderer Gary Gilmore became the first offender to be executed after the death penalty was reinstated.

history

The entire valley of the Great Salt Lake was originally the territory of the Ute Indians. The first whites were the members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (Mormons), who moved into the wilderness over the Rocky Mountains in 1847/48 to practice their young and controversial religion, undisturbed by persecution.

Draper is one of the oldest settlements in Utah, as early as 1849 Mormon pioneers moved south from Salt Lake City and built a small settlement in the extreme south of the valley on the creek of South Willow Creek . At the end of the following year, twenty families were already living in the region. They named their place first Willow Creek , later Brownsville , before it was named after Bishop William Draper, the Church of Jesus Christ, who had moved with his family to the settlement in 1850.

The economic basis of Draper was chicken farms and the cultivation of sugar beets. This only changed after the Second World War, when the settlement axis on the east bank of the Salt Lake under the mountains became urbanized and Draper in the south and at the breakthrough of the Jordan River slowly became a suburb of Salt Lake City from the neighboring Utah Valley . The influence increased in the 1990s when Draper opened up large commercial spaces and attracted companies and their employees.

Draper today

Draper grew rapidly from 7257 inhabitants in 1990 to 25,220 (2000) to 42,274 inhabitants in 2010, which represents an increase of 67.6% in the last decade. Today, Draper is the seat of eBay's central call center and the seat of the first IKEA store in Utah. Since 2009, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has had its own temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the locality.

Draper's growth attracted people with a much higher formal education than the region's average; 40.0% of Draper residents have college degrees versus 29.6% in Salt Lake County. This also results in an income that is well above average. The median household income in Draper in 2009 was $ 87,290, compared to $ 56,954 for Salt Lake County.

The Interstate Highway 15 opens up the place in North-South direction and binds him to Salt Lake City in the north, and the region Orem / Provo to the south.
