Murray is a city in Salt Lake County in Utah , United States .

history

In 1847, Mormons came to the Salt Lake Basin. In 1848, the Mississippi Saints , other Mormon pioneers, settled further south than the others in what is now the Murray area, which was then called Mississippi Ward, Cottonwood, Big Cottonwood and South Cottonwood and was cultivated for agriculture.

In 1869 two ore deposits were found, so that in 1870 smelting furnaces were built in Murray on the railway. In the same year, the South Cottonwood Post Office was also opened.

Eli Houston Murray was Governor of Utah from 1880 to 1886 . After him, the South Cottonwood Post Office was renamed the Murray Post Office in 1883.

After unrest, the local newspaper publisher founded an initiative in 1901 to establish a municipality with its own administration, which in 1902 received a majority in a vote. CL Miller became Murray's first Mayor .
