In 1966 and 1968, Zander belonged to the eighth who won the Spartakiad . After the eighth from the Federal Republic of Germany had won the title at the first two World Rowing Championships in 1962 and 1966, the GDR eighth won in 1970, which was composed of very young rowers by coach Elmar Anthony. Hans-Joachim Puls , Klaus-Peter Foppke , Bernd Ahrendt , Eckhard Martens , Reinhard Gust , Dietrich Zander, Rolf Jobst , Ernst-Otto Borchmann and helmsman Reinhard Zahn were given the attribute baby eight .
