Torben Johannesen (born September 21, 1994 in Hamburg ) is a German rower .

Torben Johannesen started rowing in 2005 at the Bergedorf Rowing Club . In 2011 he took fifth place with the four with a helmsman at the Junior World Championships , the following year he was fourth in the two without a helmsman . At the U23 World Championships in 2013 he won the bronze medal in a four-man with a helmsman and in 2014 he finished fourth with eighth . In 2015 he made his debut in the German eighth at the Rowing World Cup in Varese . In the same year he was eighth U-23 world champion. In 2016 he competed in the World Cup in a four-man without a helmsman and in a two- man without a helmsman, and was nominated as a substitute for the 2016 Olympic Games.

In 2017 Johannesen moved up in the Germany eighth . At the European Championships in May 2017, the newly composed Germany eight won the gold medal. After victories at the Rowing World Cup in Poznan and Lucerne, the eighth also remained unbeaten at the end of the season and won the title at the World Championships in Sarasota . In 2018, the Germany eight won all three regattas in the World Cup with the same line-up as in 2017. At the European Championships in Glasgow , the eighth won ahead of the Dutch and the Romanians. A month and a half later, the eighth also won the title at the World Championships in Plovdiv, ahead of the Australians and the British. At the beginning of the 2019 season, the Germany eight won the 2019 European Championships in Lucerne, ahead of the British and the Dutch. At the world championships, the Germans won ahead of the Dutch and the British.

Johannesen was voted Hamburg's Sportsman of the Year in 2017, 2018 and 2019 .

Torben Johannesen is a sports soldier and student teacher. His brother Eric was Germany eighth from 2011 to 2016 and was Olympic champion in 2012.
