The 1.68 m tall Bernd Kaiser from SC Dynamo Berlin had already become GDR champion in eighth in 1972, but the Olympic starters and bronze medalists from Munich did not take part in these championships in eighth. Kaiser won his second GDR championship title in 1978. For the rowing world championships in 1978 on Lake Karapiro in New Zealand a GDR eight was formed, which included rowers from the master boat of the GDR championships and from the runner-up boat. At the GDR championships in 1981 and 1982, Bernd Kaiser drove the third-placed eighth. In 1983 he won his third GDR championship title in this boat class, but Hendrik Reiher was in the boat for Kaiser at the 1983 rowing world championships .
