James Barrie Mabbott (born November 19, 1960 in Carterton ) is a former New Zealand rower .

The 1.95 m tall Barrie Mabbott from the North Shore Rowing Club in Auckland was earmarked for an Olympic start in a foursome with a helmsman back in 1980 . Because of the Olympic boycott , the New Zealanders did not take part in the 1980 Olympic Games in Moscow . Two years later, Mabbott started at the 1982 World Championships in Lucerne in one and finished eleventh. The following year he was a member of the New Zealand eight , who won the title at the 1983 World Championships in Duisburg in front of the boats from the GDR and Australia. At the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles, Kevin Lawton , Donald Symon , Barrie Mabbott, Ross Tong and helmsman Brett Hollister competed in a four with helmsman and finished third behind the boats from the United Kingdom and the United States in the preliminary run. In the hope race, the New Zealanders won ahead of the US boat and the boat from the Federal Republic of Germany. In the final, the same run-in as in the preliminaries resulted in the top places, the British won ahead of the team from the host country and the New Zealanders.

Two years later, Mabbott was at the 1986 World Championships in Nottingham again with the eighth at the start and finished in seventh place. A month earlier he and Ian Wright had won the silver medal in two without a helmsman and the bronze medal in eight at the 1986 Commonwealth Games in Edinburgh .
