The city is part of the Etawah district . Bharthana has the status of Nagar Palika Parishad . The city is divided into 25 wards . It had a total of 44,120 inhabitants on the cut-off date of the 2011 census, of which 23,213 were men and 20,907 women. Hindus form the largest group of the city's population with a share of over 91%, followed by Muslims with over 8%. The literacy rate in 2011 was 86.48%.
