Etawah ( Hindi : इटावा जिला) is a district in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh .
Etawah is 130 km west of the city of Kanpur in the Kanpur division . The Chambal River flows along the southern district border, while the Yamuna runs further north through the district. Both rivers meet in the southeast of the district. The district capital is the city of Etawah . The district covers 2311 km² (according to other sources 2434 km).

The population of Auraiya was 1,581,810 at the 2011 census. Ten years earlier it was 1,338,871. The gender ratio was 870 women for 1,000 men. The literacy rate was 78.41% (86.06% for men, 69.61% for women). 92.17% of the population were Hindu , 7.20% Muslim .

history
On September 17, 1997, the Tehsils Auraiya and Bidhuna were separated from the Etawah district and have since formed the newly established Auraiya district .
