Mathura is a district in the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh .

The area is 3,340 km². The administrative seat is the city of Mathura .

history

In the 6th century BC BC Mathura became the capital of the Surasena Mahajanapada . The city was later ruled by the Maurya Empire ( 4th to 2nd centuries BC ) and the Shunga Dynasty (2nd century BC). It could be between 180 BC. BC and 100 BC Came under the control of the Indo-Greeks . Later rulers over the area were u. a. the Mughal Empire and the British .

population

The population is 2,547,184 (2011). The population growth rate in the period from 2001 to 2011 was 22.78% and was therefore very high. Mathura has a gender ratio of 863 women per 1000 men. The district has a literacy rate of 70.36% in 2011, an increase of almost nine percentage points compared to 2001. Almost 91% of the population are Hindus and around 9% are Muslims .

Almost 29.7% of the population lived in cities. The largest agglomeration of the district was Mathura with 456,706 inhabitants.
