Meerut ( Hindi : मेरठ ज़िला; also Merath ) is a district in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh .

Meerut is located in the west of Uttar Pradesh in the Meerut division . The district is located 60 km northeast of the federal capital New Delhi . The south-flowing Ganges forms the eastern border of the district. District capital is Meerut . The district covers 2559 km².

The population of Meerut was 3,443,689 in the 2011 census. 10 years earlier it was 2,997,361. The gender ratio was 886 women for 1,000 men. The literacy rate was 72.84% (80.74% for men, 63.98% for women). 63.40% of the population were Hindu , 34.43% Muslim .
