Balrampur is a district in the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh .

The area is 3,349 km². The administrative seat is the city of Balrampur . Lucknow , the capital of Uttar Pradesh, is 162 kilometers from the capital of the Balrampur district.

history

The area covered by today's Balrampur District was part of the ancient Kosala Kingdom .

The district of Balrampur was founded on May 25, 1997 by order of the government of Uttar Pradesh and created from parts of the Gonda district.

population

The population is 2,148,665 (2011). The population growth rate in the period from 2001 to 2011 was 27.72% and was therefore very high. Balrampur has a gender ratio of 906 women per 1000 men. The district has a literacy rate of 49.51% in 2011, an increase of almost 15 percentage points compared to 2001. However, literacy is well below the national average. Almost 62% of the population are Hindus and around 38% are Muslims .

Almost 7.7% of the population live in cities.
