Tehsils
The district is divided into 4 tehsils :
history
The Amethi district was created on July 1, 2010 from parts of the Sultanpur and Raebareli districts. The new district received the three Tehsils Amethi, Gauriganj and Musafirkhana from Sultanpur, and the two Tehsils Salon and Tiloi from Raebareli. Originally the district was named Chhatrapati Shahuji Maharaj Nagar . The name referred to the Shahu (Chhatrapati Shahuji Maharaj) called Maharaja of Kolhapur (1884-1922), who is venerated by the Dalit movement for the social reforms he has initiated. The name of the newly founded district corresponded to the program of the BSP politician Mayawati , who was then ruling in Uttar Pradesh, who renamed numerous districts of the state after icons of the Dalit movement. Since the district is largely congruent with the constituency of Amethi, from which Mayawati's political rival Rahul Gandhi was elected to the Indian parliament, the Lok Sabha , the renaming of the district to Chhatrapati Shahuji Maharaj was considered a symbolic political success of Mayawati. After the BSP was replaced in 2012 by the Samajwadi Party in government, the new head of government Akhilesh Yadav initiated the renaming of Chhatrapati Shahuji Maharaj Nagar in Amethi district in July 2012 . In 2013 the Tehsil Salon was removed from the district and incorporated into the Rae Bareli district.
The last Indian census in 2011 was carried out according to the old administrative structure, therefore no population data is available for the Amethi district.
