history
The area of the district of Sant Ravidas Nagar belonged in the 18th century to the possessions of the Maharajas of Benares. After the latter ceded his sovereignty to the British , the area was incorporated as part of the Mirzapur district in British India , but remained as a family property of the Maharajas. In 1911 the British gave the Maharaja's lands the status of the princely state of Benares . This consisted of two exclaves west and south-east of the city of Varanasi, the western of which is congruent with the current district area. After Indian independence, the princely state of Benares was incorporated into the Varanasi district. In 1996, Sant Ravidas Nagar broke away as an independent district from the Varanasi district.
