The Lucknow District ( Hindi लखनऊ जिला ) is a district in the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh . The administrative and economic center is the city of Lucknow (also known as Lakhnau ), with a population of around 3 million .

geography

The Lucknow district borders in the southwest on the Unnao district , in the northwest on the Hardoi district ; in the north the district is bounded by the Sitapur district ; the Barabanki district borders in the northeast and the Raebareli district in the southeast .

The Lucknow district, which is around 75% rural, is divided into four administrative districts ( Tehsils or Subdivisions ): Bakshi Ka Talab, Lucknow, Malihabad and Mohanlalganj with a total of around 800 villages and - in addition to the metropolis of Lucknow - only three medium-sized cities: Bakshi Ka Talab (approx 55,000), Kakori (approx. 22,000) and Malihabad (approx. 20,000).

The Lucknow District is part of the extremely fertile Avadh (or Oudh ) region in the Ganges plain ; it lies at heights of approx. 100 to 150 m. The average annual precipitation amounts to approx. 1000 mm / year, of which approx. 90% are accounted for by the summer monsoon months .

population

As a result of the sustained population growth in large parts of northern India and due to immigration, the population of the district has increased enormously in recent decades:

year 1991 2001 2011
Residents 2,762,801 3,647,834 4,589,838

Hindus dominate the rural villages (around 90%); about 30% of the urban population are Muslims . In the decade between 2001 and 2011, the population grew by a good 25% to around 3.65 million, with the male population clearly exceeding the female population. Only about a third of the population lives in rural villages; a fifth of people (mostly women) are illiterate. They speak Awadhi , a mixture of Hindi and Urdu .

The district of Lucknow is still characterized by agriculture to a very high degree, with migrant workers also playing a not unimportant role to this day. The megacity of Lucknow, on the other hand, is an industrial center; There are also smaller and larger shops as well as craft businesses, banks, hospitals and secondary schools. Most of the villages are connected to the regional transport network by bus routes; several national railway lines cross in Lucknow .

history

The region around Lucknow belonged to the ancient Kosala Empire as well as the Maurya Empire and the Gupta Empire , but there are no archaeologically usable traces from this time. In Islamic times the Sultanate of Delhi ruled first (since 1206), from which the Sultanate of Jaunpur was detached in 1394 . After the Battle of Panipat (1526), large parts of northern India fell to the Mughal Empire , which raised the Avadh (also Oudh ) region to the rank of a province. After Aurangzeb's death (1707) it took another 15 years until the region with the capital Faizabad broke away from the increasingly weaker Mughal empire. A little later, the first Nizam of Oudh relocated the capital of his empire to Lucknow, which was expanded by the second Nizam Safdarjung (ruled 1739–1754). From 1856 the area was under British control. After the independence of India (1947) and after the territorial reform of 1956, the district came to the then newly created state of Uttar Pradesh .

Attractions

The region around Lucknow, consisting largely of alluvial land , has neither ancient nor medieval buildings or sculptures. The structures that have been preserved come almost exclusively from the Islamic period and - like the buildings of Mughal architecture  - have a clad brick structure ; they are concentrated in Lucknow and here especially in the Bara Imambara complex.
