history

The monastery of Santa María la Real (sometimes also: Convento de El Real ) was founded in 1200 (according to Peugniez: 1178) by Abbot Gómez Román and his brother Naron south of Arévalo in Lugarejo (which is why it was known as "Monasterio Gómez") and in 1524 Relocated to the city where Emperor Charles V had donated a building. In 1951 the convent was incorporated into the Trappist Order (OCSO). In 1973 he moved to a new monastery in the north of Arévalo, on the other side of the Autovía A-6 . The Ermita de la Lugareja is left of the first monastery to the southwest of Arévalo, not far from the AV-P-116 road . The second monastery was demolished and replaced with residential buildings.
