The district of Mau ( Hindi : मऊ जिला ) is a district of the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh . The administrative center is the eponymous city of Mau (Maunath Bhanjan).

geography

The district of Mau is located in the east of Uttar Pradesh and belongs to the Azamgarh division . Neighboring districts are Azamgarh in the west, Gorakhpur in the northwest, Deoria in the northeast, Ballia in the east and Ghazipur in the south.

With an area of ​​1713 km², Mau is one of the smaller districts of Uttar Pradesh. The district area lies in the flat and intensively agricultural Ganges plain and is bordered in the north by the Ghaghara , a large tributary of the Ganges.

history

The Mau district was established in 1988 as an independent district. The area had previously been part of the Azamgarh District .

population

According to the 2011 census, the Mau district has 2,205,968 inhabitants. Between 2001 and 2011 the population grew by 19 percent. The Mau district is very densely populated: the population density of 1288 inhabitants per km² is well above the already high average of Uttar Pradesh (829 inhabitants per km²). The share of the urban population is 23 percent. The literacy rate is 73 percent, higher than the state average (68 percent).

According to the 2001 census, 81 percent of the district's population are Hindus . There is also a larger Muslim minority of 19 percent. Most Muslims live in cities: They even make up the majority of the urban population.
