Olivais is a subway station on the Linha Vermelha of the Lisbon Metro , the subway network of the Portuguese capital . The station is located at the intersection of Rua Cidade de Bissau and Rua de Luanda streets in the Lisbon borough of Olivais . The neighboring train stations are Chelas and Cabo Ruivo ; the station went into operation on November 7, 1998.

history

The Olivais metro station is part of the Linha Vermelha between Alameda and Oriente, which was built for the 1998 World Exhibition . However, while the line itself was opened before the World Exhibition (May 19, 1998), there were subsidence at the planned Olivais and Cabo Ruivo stations, so that it could only go into operation later. Olivais train station opened on November 7, 1998.

The architect Rui Cardim designed the station . What is characteristic of Olivais is that the station is particularly low; At 36 meters, the station is one of the deepest on the Lisbon Metro. This also enabled an architecturally rare variant in the Lisbon metro construction: The two 105-meter-long side platforms are completely visible, the view is not impaired by a transverse mezzanine floor. The exits are each in a side aisle, from where stone and escalators take passengers to a mezzanine floor with the usual access barriers, ticket counters and shopping facilities. From there there are exits in every direction, the train station is right in the center of the Olivais Sul district . Several lift systems enable people with reduced mobility to use the station.

The artist Nuno de Siqueira designed several tile paintings on which he would like to highlight Portugal's contribution to the development of modernity, in particular through Vasco da Gama’s journey and the apparition of Fátima . The artist Cecília de Sousa, in turn, tried to get to the bottom of the traces of the name "Olivais" and depicts this with several sculptures. A carriage wheel and a grindstone from an oil press can also be seen as an indication of the earlier agricultural character of the area.
