history
The Bela Vista underground station is part of the Linha Vermelha , which was completely rebuilt in 1998 between Alameda and Oriente and took place in today's Parque das Nações on the occasion of the 1998 World Exhibition . The station went into operation on May 19, 1998.
Paulo Brito da Silva was responsible for the station design, whose design was based heavily on the usual Lisbon metro station. The station has two 105 meter long side platforms. In the middle of the hall there is a mezzanine level inserted as a crossbar, from where exits lead to the north and east. The station also received three lifts. Querubim Lapa , Portuguese painter and ceramist, took on the design of the station . Lapa designed various tile patterns on the platform walls as well as two large tile paintings for the mezzanine. They often show geometric shapes in the context of abstract art. In doing so, Lapa breaks with the usual azulejo tradition , as he uses 20 × 20 centimeter tiles that are smaller than the usual.
The subway station is best known for its proximity to Parque da Bela Vista (also called Quinta da Bela Vista), where large open-air concerts (for example Rock in Rio ) take place on a regular basis . On the occasion of this, there are regular nightly special trips for the concert guests.
