Olaias is a metro station on the Linha Vermelha of the Lisbon Metro , the subway network of the Portuguese capital . The train station is located on Rua de Olivença / Avenida Engenheiro Arantes e Oliveira in the Lisbon municipality of Areeiro . The neighboring train stations are Alameda and Bela Vista ; the station went into operation on May 19, 1998.

history

construction

The Olaias underground station is part of the Linha Vermelha, which was completely rebuilt for the 1998 Expo and went into operation on May 19, 1998 between Alameda and Oriente. The World's Fair started three days later.

From 1988, the operating company of the metro, Metropolitano de Lisboa, EPE , placed great emphasis on the artistic design of the stations. This concept culminated in the construction of the Linha Vermelha . She was able to win the architect and artist Tomás Taveira , who was responsible for the entire station, for the construction of the Olaias station. The station is located very low, directly to the west of a valley, through which the Linha de Cintura runs, over which the metro runs over a short viaduct. Due to these geographical and structural conditions, it was possible to design the station much larger than usual. The two side platforms are oversized, so that massive rows of hall beams found their place on both platforms. The height of the hall is also unique in the Lisbon metro network. The only entrances to the station are to the west of the station, in front of which there is an access hall corresponding to the dimensions of the station. With the construction, the station received three lifts.

Artistic arrangement

In addition to Tomás Taveira as group leader, Pedro Cabrita Reis , Graça Pereira Coutinho , Pedro Calapez , Rui Sanchez and António Palolo were involved in the artistic design . Apart from the individual works of the artists, Taveira gave the station a very colorful and colorful impression, hardly any element of the station - not even the viaduct behind the station - falls out of this atmosphere.

Cabrita Reis participated with a relatively sober work of art entitled “Ascensão” (Ascent), which stands in the middle of the entrance hall. It shows various interconnected stairs in the colors and black and white and is intended to convey a symbolic ascent to the passenger - the work of art is right next to the escalator and stone stairs to the road surface. Pereira Coutinho, in turn, participated with a very individualized work of art. Oversized plaster walls accompany the passenger on the escalators from the entrance hall to the two side platforms. The plaster walls are divided into many squares of the same size, in each of which a human handprint can be seen (and felt). The work should represent the individual track and brand of each individual passenger. Calapez designed various relief forms for the entrance hall. Sanchez, on the other hand, created a steel sculpture with a supposedly rusted surface, which is supposed to be strong and powerful and yet very discreet. Palolo, on the other hand, was not involved in the design of the station itself, but created many colorful panels for the short viaduct over the Linha de Cintura - and with his colorful choice of colors also fits into the station design.

The suburban train station Chelas is just 300 meters south of the subway station as the crow flies, and a transfer option has not yet been made possible from both sides ( CP Urbanos de Lisboa and Metropolitano de Lisboa ). There are plans to move the suburban train station further north, this would be part of the considerable conversion of the Linha de Cintura from two to four tracks. Implementation of these plans by REFER is uncertain.
