Saldanha is a metro station at the intersection of the Linha Amarela and Linha Vermelha of the Lisbon Metro , the subway network of the Portuguese capital . The station for the Linha Amarela went into operation on December 29, 1959 as one of the eleven stations of the original Lisbon network, the Linha Vermelha station on August 29, 2009.

Geographical location

The train station is located directly under the square of the same name, the Praça Duque de Saldanha, and so on the border between the two Lisbon municipalities Avenidas Novas and Arroios . The neighboring stations of the train station are Picoas and Campo Pequeno or São Sebastião and Alameda .

history

The Saldanha metro station , along with ten other stations, was one of the first in the Lisbon metro network, which was opened on December 29, 1959 by the Lisbon city council and the operating company Metropolitano de Lisboa, EP . The station, which is named after the above-ground square of the same name ( Praça Duque de Saldanha ), had the usual design of the Lisbon subway stations when it opened. The Portuguese architect João Falcão e Cunha designed the train station . The Portuguese painter Maria Keil was responsible for the architectural design . She chose azulejos with different rectangles and the color combinations ocher / white and blue / black. However, these are no longer available today.

The increasing number of passengers in the sixties and seventies, caused by the relocation of the business center to the north of Lisbon, called for a further increase in the capacity of the Lisbon metro network. Since initially the financial possibilities for extending the route were not available, the operating company and the city administration decided to extend the platforms first. These varied in length between 40 and 70 meters and were to be standardized to 105 meters for 6-car trains. At the Saldanha underground station , the platforms were extended to the north under the direction of the architects Falcão e Cunha and Carlos Sanchez Jorge , and again the artist Keil was responsible for the tile design.

In the mid-1990s, the station was to be thoroughly renovated. Starting with the northern access (reopened on December 28, 1996), the renovation of the platforms and the southern access followed (until May 17, 1997) under the direction of Paulo Brito da Silva . In this context, the artists Jorge Vieira and Luis Filipe de Abreu redesigned the station, choosing people and movement as the theme for their redesign. Numerous different marble figures that shape the human being - the hand, the head, etc. - can be found on the walls as well as a compass rose, designed by Jorge Vieira. Luís Filipe de Abreu chose the traditional form of azulejo art and represented the four basic elements (earth, water, air, fire) , the seasons and the feelings of meeting, saying goodbye and hope. With this basic redesign, the earlier Keil azulejos disappeared completely.

At the beginning of 2003, construction work began on the 2.2 kilometer extension of the Linha Verlmelha (Red Line) from Alameda via Saldanha to São Sebastião . Originally planned to run until 2006, the work could only be completed in August 2009. At Saldanha Metro Station, the two new platforms are at right angles to the existing ones on Avenida Duque de Ávila . The station Saldanha II should use per year about 17.6 million passengers. The total cost of the entire extension should amount to around 132 million euros. In connection with the conversion to a transfer station, the Saldanha station will be retrofitted with at least two elevators, the opening took place on August 29, 2009.
