Cidade Universitária Metro Station
Cidade Universitária is a metro station on the Linha Amarela of the Lisbon Metro , the subway network of the Portuguese capital . The train station is located in the Lisbon municipality of Alvalade, on Avenida Professor Gama Pinto, at the level of the Aula Magna of the University of Lisbon. The neighboring train stations are Campo Grande and Entre Campos . The station went into operation on October 14, 1988. The name of the subway station, Cidade Universitária , in English "University City", refers to the surrounding area: The station is located in the middle of the Lisbon University campus .
history
With the construction of the university city, the new campus of the Lisbon University , near the Campo Grande and the subsequent influx of numerous university institutes, the number of daily passengers to the north grew considerably. In order to be able to reach the largest Portuguese university directly by metro, the city administration and operating company decided to extend the line branch of the metro towards Entre Campos by one station. The tram to Lumiar , which ran along the new route, had already been shut down in 1972, so students either had to use the buses or the longer walk from Entre Campos train station . The construction of the new line, which should only have this one new station, represented a new attempt to expand the Lisbon metro network, after the last opening took place in 1972, before the Carnation Revolution. Together with the opening of the new Sete Rios - Colégio Militar route , it forms the so-called “3. Expansion stage "of the metro network.
The operating company Metropolitano de Lisboa, EP opened the new station on August 14, 1988. The station with its two 105 meter long side platforms was designed by the Portuguese architect Carlos Sanchez Jorge . The station itself dominates the picture Le Métro artist Maria Helena Vieira da Silva from 1940. The by Manuel Cargaleiro on Azulejos banned gouache picture was originally titled Abrigo anti-Aéreo (to German "bomb shelter") and displays seemingly anonymous people who flee from the approaching air bombardment in a station on the Paris Metro, although Damião de Góis , Socrates and Mário de Sá-Carneiro can be identified. In addition to this azulejo picture, the original of which is on permanent loan from the Metropolitano de Lisboa in the exhibition rooms of the Árpád Szenès-Vieira da Silva Foundation, there are two quotes from Socrates and Cesário Verde on the platform walls, as well as pictures of owls from Greek mythology to symbolize wisdom and thus to represent an allusion to the neighboring teaching institutions.
From 1988 to 1993, the station was the terminus for all trains from the city center or Alvalade . In 1993 the branch was extended to Campo Grande and in 1995 it was converted into a separate line, the Linha Amarela (yellow line). The train station has no elevator.
