Lumiar [ 'lumiaɾ ] is a Portuguese parish ( freguesia ) in the 3rd Bairro of the capital Lisbon . It is 6.6 km² and has 45,605 inhabitants (as of June 30, 2011), making it one of the largest municipalities in Lisbon. Neighboring municipalities are Odivelas , Campo Grande , São João de Brito , Olivais , Charneca do Lumiar , Ameixoeira and Carnide . Lumiar is directly adjacent to the southwest of Lisbon Airport .

Due to its size, the municipality is divided into the following Bairros (neighborhoods): Alta de Lisboa, Calvanas, Paço do Lumiar, Telheiras and Bairro da Cruz Vermelha.

history

The Freguesia Lumiar was founded on April 2, 1166 as a parish district. In the 18th century the parish belonged to the neighboring parish of Santa Maria dos Olivais for a few years, but on July 18, 1885 it became a parish of the city of Lisbon. Since the end of the 19th century, Lumiar experienced enormous growth due to its location as a suburb of Lisbon.

Culture

Lumiar is home to the Museu Nacional do Traje ( Costume Museum ) and the Museu Nacional do Teatro , Portugal's theater museum.

The José Alvalade Stadium of Sporting Lisbon is located on Campo Grande .

The Eixo Norte-Sul expressway , an important transport link that was completed in 2008, runs through Lumiar in a north-east-south-west direction . Lisbon Airport is to the east of Lumiar .
