history

Benfica began as a village with simple farmers in the region around Lisbon ( Saloio in Portuguese ). Some religious communities have also settled here with them .

In the 15th century, the place was promoted due to its location in the Termo de Lisboa area and was awarded two judge positions. This was accompanied by the establishment of three important religious orders, the Nossa Senhora do Amparo, Santo António and São Sebastião.

In the 18th century, a high level of immigration of the new wealthy began, who, inspired by the landscape, built their quintas here.

The 19th century was marked by the development of public transport and the further growth of the city.

With the abolition of the Termo de Lisboa in 1852, the area of Benfica was integrated into the new district of Santa Maria de Belém , which was divided again in 1886. The outer part of Benfica (up to the Estrada da Circunvalação de Lisboa ) was transferred to the district of Oeiras (this area is now part of the district of Amadora ), and the inner part was incorporated into Lisbon. This is the part of today's community.

The community continued to grow rapidly, making it more and more of a city. From the 1950s to the 1990s, the population tripled from 17,843 to around 50,000.

In 1959 the area was divided again and the municipality of São Domingos de Benfica was established.

In recent years there has been a decline in the population as the population ages and young people move to the periphery of Lisbon.
