Parque Florestal de Monsanto
The Parque Florestal de Monsanto is a wooded park in the west of the Portuguese capital Lisbon . With an area of over 800 hectares , it is the largest green space in the city.
General
The site extends over the Serra de Monsanto , a hilly area that connects to the west of the built-up city center. The park is separated from this by the IP7 / E1 expressway . The south of the park is crossed by the A5 leading to Estoril and Cascais .
About 16 hectares of the area are fenced in, where different animal species live. There are also usable areas for permanent exhibitions and concerts as well as the Restaurante de Montes Claros .
history
Originally the area was used intensively for agriculture, which led to the disappearance of all vegetation and extensive erosion. When ever larger areas were designated as building land in the 1930s, the politician Duarte Pacheco took up the idea of reforesting the practically barren Serra de Monsanto. In 1934, under the direction of the architect Francisco Keil do Amaral, the new Monsanto Park was set up with a number of sports and leisure facilities. Circuito de Monsanto is the name of a racing course within the park, where numerous races were held from 1954 to 1959, including the 1959 Portuguese Grand Prix in the automobile world championship .
