Estoril [ ɨʃtuˈɾiɫ ] is a village and former municipality ( Freguesia ) in the district ( Concelho ) of Cascais in Portugal . It is a seaside resort on the Costa do Estoril , the coast to the west of the capital Lisbon , on the edge of the Estremadura region . Estoril is traditionally considered a retreat for the rich upper class.

In blue a faceless golden sun with flamed rays and on it five quinas placed in a cross. The silver shield base is separated by a wave cut with two green waves . A three-tower wall crown rests on the shield . The towers are tinned. In the white band at the base of the shield, the place name in black letters "ESTORIL".
history
In Estoril there are remains of Roman villas from the time around the birth of Christ. Since the 8th century, Estoril belonged to the emirate , then to the Caliphate of Cordoba . In 1147, after the siege of Lisbon , Estoril fell to Alfonso I , the first king of Portugal.
For centuries, Estoril lived mainly from fishing. Estoril was the last place in their homeland that Portuguese explorers saw when leaving Lisbon and the first when they returned. Fortifications on the coast show that Estoril had to fight off pirate attacks several times.
Estoril was the exile of the Spanish pretender Juan de Borbón y Battenberg during the Franco dictatorship in Spain . It was not until his son, Juan Carlos , that he was able to take the throne back home. Other overthrown rulers also held a neat exile in Estoril. a. Miklós Horthy from Hungary, Umberto II from Italy , the last Bulgarian Tsar Simeon from Saxe-Coburg-Gotha and Charles II from Romania .
Culture and sights
The picturesque coast around Estoril has been one of the attractions of Portuguese tourism since the early 20th century. The center of the village essentially consists of glamorous hostels along palm-lined avenues and ends at a beach section that is heavily frequented in summer.
After casinos had already existed here before, the Casino Estoril was opened in 1931 . The British secret service officer Ian Fleming , who later devised the character of James Bond as a writer , stayed in the Palacio Hotel , to which the casino belonged, in order to shadow agents of the Axis powers . Scenes for national and international films were also repeatedly filmed here, for example in 1969 for James Bond 007 - On Her Majesty's Secret Service . The casino is also known as the venue for a wide variety of cultural events.
The traditional Cascais Jazz Festival was moved here in 1990 and has been called the Festival de Jazz do Estoril since then .
The film festival LEFFest - Lisbon & Estoril Film Festival has been held here since 2007 .
In 2009 in Estoril the XIX. Ibero America Summit held.
Sports
Near Estoril is the Circuito do Estoril , a race track that is no longer used for Formula 1 races ( Portuguese Grand Prix ), but on which the Portuguese Grand Prix for motorcycles is held every year .
The local soccer club Estoril Praia played in the first division season 2004/05 for the first time in the first Portuguese league , in which he takes part again after relegation and promotion to the 2012/13 season . The club plays its home games at the Estádio António Coimbra da Mota .
Estoril hosted the 1970 Portuguese Badminton Championship .
In addition, the tennis tournaments ATP Estoril and WTA Estoril took place in the neighboring district of Oeiras every year from 1990 to 2012 , but were called the Estoril Open . In 2013 it was renamed before it moved to the Estoril Tennis Club in Estoril in 2016 and has been held there regularly ever since.

Despite its dense population and its social, historical and cultural importance, Estoril has neither the status of a city ( Cidade ) nor of a small town ( Vila ).
Estoril was the seat of a parish of the same name ( Freguesia ) in the district ( Concelho ) of Cascais. On June 30, 2011 the community had 26,179 inhabitants on an area of 8.8 km². In the course of the municipal reform in Portugal in 2013 , the municipality of Estoril was dissolved on September 29, 2013 and Cascais was incorporated.

The Estoril station is connected to Lisbon ( Estação Cais do Sodré ) in the east and Cascais to the west via the S-Bahn- like suburban trains of the Linha de Cascais along the coast . The journey time is approx. 40 minutes.
The A5 motorway runs past Estoril with its own exit.
