The Partido Social Democrata ( PPD-PSD ) [ 'paɾtidu su'sjaɫ dəmu'kɾatɐ ] listen ? / i ( German Social Democratic Party ) is a conservative-liberal Portuguese party. It was founded on May 6, 1974 by Francisco Sá Carneiro , Francisco Pinto Balsemão , Emídio Guerreiro and Joaquim Magalhães Mota under the name Partido Popular Democrático ( PPD ). Along with the Partido Socialista, it is one of the two people's parties in Portugal . The three arrows in the party logo represent the three basic social democratic values: freedom, equality, solidarity. Audio file / audio sample

The PSD was the first Portuguese party to achieve an absolute majority in the 1987 elections after the Carnation Revolution, led by Aníbal Cavaco Silva . Since 1976, when the new Portuguese constitution was introduced, the PSD has been involved in nine out of seventeen governments.

On May 31, 2008, Manuela Ferreira Leite was elected as the new party leader through the primary election of the members. She replaced Luís Filipe Menezes , who had announced his resignation on April 17, 2008. Ferreira Leite was elected with around 38% of the vote. She had three male opponents. In 2010 she was replaced by Pedro Passos Coelho , who won the parliamentary elections the following year and served as Portuguese Prime Minister until 2016.

The PSD is the publisher of the newspaper Povo Livre (Free People).

Traditional strongholds of the party are the north of Portugal (e.g. the administrative districts of Bragança and Vila Real ) and the autonomous region of Madeira .
