The Assembleia da República [ ɐsẽ'blɐiɐ dɐ ʁɛ'publikɐ ] ( German  Assembly of the Republic ) is the Portuguese parliament . The Portuguese Constitution describes it in Article 147 as “the representative assembly of all Portuguese citizens” and in Article 110 as a constitutional “sovereign body” alongside the President of the Republic , the government and the courts. In Portugal there is a unicameral system .

    background

The parliament consists of a chamber with up to 230 members and is located in the Palácio de São Bento in Lisbon . The MPs are elected for four years, with the pure proportional representation (separated by district). The president has the right to dissolve parliament and call new elections. Parliament has the right to express its distrust of the government, to initiate impeachment proceedings against the president, and to amend the constitution with a two-thirds majority .
