States of Guernsey

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The States of Guernsey (French: États de Guernesey ) are the parliament of the Channel Island Guernsey and the associated island Herm .

The States of Guernsey also have certain legislative powers for Alderney and Sark (as part of the Bailiwick of Guernsey) as "Bailiwick-wide legislation". Originally, the States of Guernsey was an assembly of estates, consisting of the chief judge (Bailiff), the pastors, the mayors (constables) and the representatives (jurats) elected by the taxpayers. The latter were chosen for life, the constables for three years. After several constitutional reforms, all members of the States of Guernsey are now directly elected, with two members elected by the States of Alderney representing Alderney.
