Administrative divisions of the United Kingdom

The territorial division of the United Kingdom has undergone major changes several times since the late 19th century, which in some cases led to completely new administrative districts and later to the dissolution of such districts. Nevertheless, some of the names of the old counties are still used today, even though the place no longer belongs to this county. The following overview shows the status from 2013.

England

England is divided into regions which, apart from Greater London, have no administrative functions. Greater London is divided into the City of London and 32 boroughs . The remaining regions are divided into 26 Non-Metropolitan Counties , six Metropolitan Counties and 56 Unitary Authorities (single-level administrative districts). The 26 non-metropolitan counties are divided into 192 districts and the six metropolitan counties are divided into 36 metropolitan boroughs .

Wales

Wales is divided into 22 unitary authorities , who, however, different because of their history and their size designations, there are three cities ( Cities ) , ten county boroughs and nine counties . Since 1998, Wales has a parliament with limited powers, the Welsh Parliament (Welsh Parliament) .

Scotland

Scotland now consists of 32 unitary authorities , including three island districts; there is no administrative level above or below them. Decentralization is most advanced in Scotland with a Scottish Parliament and a Scottish Executive .

Northern Ireland

Since April 1, 2015, there are eleven districts with the status of a Unitary Authority in Northern Ireland . There are no higher or lower administrative units. The Northern Ireland Assembly is the Northern Irish Parliament, but like all provincial parliaments, it has limited powers.
