Administrative division of Northern Ireland

Northern Ireland since April 1, 2015 in eleven administrative districts ( Districts divided). Before that, there was a division into 26 administrative districts since 1973. As with the Principle Areas in Wales and the Council Areas in Scotland , these are so-called Unitary Authorities , i. that is, they are responsible for all local administrative tasks. There is no level of management above or below them (“single level management”). The districts have the status of a borough or a city partly because of their history or importance .

Administrative division from 1898 to 1973

In the existing structure since 1898, there were a total of six counties (see administrative division of Ireland # historical counties ) and two county boroughs . The counties were divided into Urban districts ("urban districts") and Rural districts ("rural districts"). Until 1973 it was a "two-tier administration".
