Antrim and Newtownabbey ( Irish Ceantar Aontroma agus Bhaile na Mainistreach ) is a district in Northern Ireland . It was formed on April 1, 2015 from the two boroughs Antrim and Newtownabbey . It is administered by the Antrim and Newtownabbey Borough Council .

location

The District extends over 710 km² from the lower reaches of the Bann and Lough Neagh to the coast of Belfast Lough . Around 138,000 people live there, 93,762 of whom are eligible to vote. The name of the new district was determined on September 17, 2008.

administration

The Antrim and Newtownabbey Borough Council replaced the Antrim Borough Council and Newtownabbey Borough Council . The first elections for the District Council were supposed to take place in May 2009, but 25 April 2008 announced Shaun Woodward , Minister of Northern Ireland that the elections in 2011 were postponed. The first elections actually took place on May 22, 2014.
