Lough Neagh [ ˌlɒx ˈneɪ ] ( Irish Loch nEathach [ ɫ̪ɔx ˈn̠ʲahax ]) is the largest lake in the British Isles . The lake is located in Northern Ireland about 30 km west of Belfast . It covers an area of 396 km² and is 30 km long and 15 km wide. At its deepest point it is about 25 m deep. It is drained by the river Bann .
The eight islands in the lake are called Coney Island, Coney Island Flat, Croaghan Flat, Derrywarragh Island, Padian, Ram's Island, Phil Roe's Flat and The Shallow Flat.
Five of the six counties ( counties ) of Northern Ireland have shown share the lake, as the card:
- Antrim - about the eastern half of the lake
- Down - a very small part in the southeast
- Armagh - south
- Tyrone - west
- Derry / Londonderry - a smaller part of the northwest
The lake area is divided among the four neighboring districts, which are listed clockwise:
- 3 Antrim and Newtownabbey to the northeast
- 4 Lisburn and Castlereagh in the east, with the smallest proportion
- 6 Armagh, Banbridge and Craigavon to the south
- 9 Mid Ulster to the west
According to an old Irish legend, the lake was created when the Irish giant Fionn mac Cumhaill (Anglicised: "Finn McCool") threw a piece of land at a Scottish opponent. However, it missed its target and the Brocken landed in the Irish Sea , creating the Isle of Man .
The methane lake Neagh Lacus on Saturn's moon Titan is named after the lake .
