Magherafelt ( Irish Machaire Fíolta ) is a city in the historic county of Londonderry in the historic province of Ulster in Northern Ireland . It is about halfway between Londonderry / Derry and Belfast in close proximity to Lough Neagh and the Sperrin Mountains . It was the administrative seat of the former district of the same name , which in 2015 became part of the Mid Ulster district. The city is now one of three administrative centers in the District of Mid Ulster.
The Irish name Machaire Fíolta means plain of Fioghalta . The origins of the city go back to 1425.
Facilities
Magherafelt owns two elementary and two secondary schools (Woods Primary School , Magherafelt Controlled Primary School, Rainey Endowed Grammar School , St. Mary's Grammar School) as well as several sports clubs, including the football club Magherafelt Sky Blues , the Gaelic Football O'Donovan Rossa Magherafelt GAC and the rugby club Rainey Old Boys Rugby Club Magherafelt . Magherafelt owns a hospital on the Northern Health and Social Services Board, Mid Ulster Hospital.

At the 2011 referendum, Magherafelt had 8,819 inhabitants. Of these, 4,516 had a United Kingdom passport and 1849 an Irish passport . 58% said they belonged to the Roman Catholic Church and 34% of another Christian church.
