Ardboe
Ardboe (also Arboe , Irish : Ard Bó , "cattle height") is a small town near the west bank of Lough Neagh in the historic county of Tyrone in Northern Ireland . The place belonged to the disbanded District Cookstown and belongs to the District Mid Ulster since 2015 . It houses a high cross , a medieval cemetery in an old council and the ruins of an abbey. Ardboe burned down completely in 1166, but was rebuilt and received a medieval parish church.
The high cross belonging to the Ulster group marks a former monastery , possibly founded in the 6th century , which is connected to St. Colman. Despite the slight damage to the ring and the weathering, the cross from the 10th century is filled with exceptionally fine biblical representations, some of which are easily recognizable.
- On the east side are Adam and Eve , the sacrifice of Isaac, Daniel in the den of lions, the young men in the fiery furnace (Old Testament) and a figure with a bell and crosier surrounded by people and Christ with scales and flames.
- The west side (New Testament) shows the visit of the wise men, the wedding of Cana (water in wine), the feeding of the 5000 (multiplication of loaves and fish), the entry into Jerusalem, the capture and the crucifixion.
- On the south side are Cain and Abel , David's fight with the lion, the killing of Goliath and Paul and Antony in the desert.
- The scenes on the north side are difficult to see. Suggested subjects are baptism, the anointing of David, the judgment of Solomon, and the slaughter of innocent children.
Arboe Abbey is a small indefinable ruin in the field north of the cemetery. The church ruins in the cemetery probably date from the early 17th century.
