Newtownabbey ( Irish : Baile na Mainistreach or Baile Úr na Mainistreach ) is next to Lisburn the largest suburb of the Northern Irish capital Belfast .
geography
Newtownabbey is located immediately north of Belfast, about eight kilometers from its center on the north-west bank of Belfast Lough , the bay on which the Northern Irish capital is also located.
history
Newtownabbey was formed in 1958 as New Town by the merger of seven parishes, namely Carnmoney, Glengormley, Jordanstown, Monkstown, Whiteabbey, Whitehouse and Whitewell. It is located in the historic county of Antrim and was the administrative seat of the former district of Newtownabbey , which was merged into the district of Antrim and Newtownabbey in 2015 . The city is now one of the two administrative headquarters of the district.
A reform of the Northern Irish local authority structure is planned by the British government, so that in the longer term the incorporation of the district of Newtownabbey into a larger administrative unit can be expected.

Newtownabbey is a typical suburban community, but it also has larger industrial areas; mechanical engineering and computer companies are mainly located in Monkstown and Cammoney. Shopping and leisure centers include the Abbey Center, Northcott Shopping Center and the Glengormley Cinema.
