history

Newtownabbey was formed in 1958 as New Town by the merger of seven parishes, namely Carnmoney, Glengormley, Jordanstown, Monkstown, Whiteabbey, Whitehouse and Whitewell. It is located in the historic county of Antrim and was the administrative seat of the former district of Newtownabbey , which was merged into the district of Antrim and Newtownabbey in 2015 . The city is now one of the two administrative headquarters of the district.

A reform of the Northern Irish local authority structure is planned by the British government, so that in the longer term the incorporation of the district of Newtownabbey into a larger administrative unit can be expected.
