Coleraine ( Irish Cúil Raithin ) is a city in the historic county of Londonderry in Northern Ireland .

Coleraine is located on the River Bann , near the confluence with the North Channel (English North Channel ). The tourist motto is Capital of the Causeway Coast .

The city has 24,634 inhabitants (2015) and was the administrative seat of the district (English borough ) Coleraine with 56,800 inhabitants (2007), until this was in 2015 in the district Causeway Coast and Glens . Coleraine is now the administrative seat of the Causeway Coast and Glens District. It is 50 miles from Belfast , 30 from Derry and 25 from Ballymena . Most of the residents are Protestants and the majority belong to the Anglican Church of Ireland .

As New University of Ulster, Coleraine , founded on the outskirts of Coleraine University merged in 1984 with Ulster Polytechnic, Jordanstown and has since been the administrative center of the University of Ulster . The campus Coleraine with 4,502 students (2017/18) is the second largest of the four university sites. On the site there is a train stop along the Coleraine-Portrush route and, since 1976, the Riverside Theater .
Sports
Coleraine FC football club plays in the NIFL Premiership , the highest league in Northern Irish football. The club finished the season 2ß18 / 19 in 6th place (out of 12).
