Tommy Sheppard (born March 6, 1959 in Coleraine ) is a Scottish politician of the Scottish National Party (SNP).

Life

Sheppard was born in Coleraine, Northern Ireland in 1959 . He attended elementary and secondary schools there and then moved to Aberdeen University to take up medicine. He eventually earned a degree in political science and sociology. In 1982 he was elected Vice President of the National Union of Students . In the same year he moved to London and did not return to Scotland until 1993. He lives in Edinburgh .

Political career

Sheppard joined the Labor Party in 1979 and was elected to Hackney County Council in 1986 . Four years later he was appointed Vice-President of the Council. On his return to Scotland, Sheppard served as assistant to the secretary general of the Scottish Labor Party under John Smith . He is considered one of the key figures in the Labor Party's electoral success in the 1997 general election in Scotland. By his own admission, it was Tony Blair who suggested that he resign from his post.

After Sheppard had long campaigned for the referendum on Scottish independence , he joined the SNP in September 2014. In the British general election in 2015 , he ran for the SNP in the constituency of Edinburgh East . He stood against the Labor MP Sheila Gilmore , who represented the constituency in the British lower house since 2010 . After the SNP gained massive votes in these elections, Sheppard achieved the highest percentage of votes with 49.2% and subsequently moved into the House of Commons for the first time. There he is a member of the Committee on Standards . Despite losing votes, Sheppard maintained his mandate in the early general election in 2017 .
