Edinburgh East is a constituency for the British House of Commons . The constituency sends a representative.

With the Act of Union in 1707 there was a need for the Scottish people to participate in the British elections. For the general election in 1708, electoral districts were therefore established in Scotland, with the Scottish capital being combined in the constituency of Edinburgh . It was not until 1885 that Edinburgh was divided into four constituencies, Edinburgh Central , Edinburgh South , Edinburgh West and Edinburgh East.

Edinburgh East comprises the eastern districts of Edinburgh. In the 1997 general election, the constituency was dissolved in favor of the newly created constituency of Edinburgh East and Musselburgh , which also included the city of Musselburgh in neighboring East Lothian . However, this was abolished after just two electoral terms and the constituency of Edinburgh East was reintroduced. The boundaries were redrawn here by adding areas of the constituencies of Edinburgh Central and Edinburgh South.
