George Reid Thomson, Lord Thomson PC KC (* 1893 in Bellshill ; † April 15, 1962 ) was a British politician.

Life

Thomson was born in Bellshill, Lanarkshire in 1893 to a Presbyterian clergyman . After his father accepted a job in South Africa , Thomson attended the South African College in Cape Town . He received a scholarship and studied law at Oxford University . Thomson received his bachelor's degree from Edinburgh University and was admitted to the bar in 1922. He served as the legal representative of the Lanarkshire Mines Union. In 1936 Thomson was appointed Crown Attorney . Between 1940 and 1945 Thomson held the position of Advocate Depute . After the war he was promoted to Lord Advocate . At the same time Thomson was introduced to the Privy Council .

Political career

In the general election in 1945 , the first post-war election, Labor politician Frederick Pethick-Lawrence ran in the constituency of Edinburgh East . Pethick-Lawrence, who until 1931 had already represented the constituency of Leicester West in the British House of Commons , won the mandate before the unionist Sinclair.

With the elevation of Pethick-Lawrence ′ to the nobility, by-elections in the constituency were required as early as October of the same year. With these Thomson applied as successor for the Labor Party. With a share of the vote of 61.6%, Thomson clearly prevailed against the unionist Galbraith and subsequently moved into the House of Commons for the first time. After Alexander Moncrieff, Lord Moncrieff because of his poor health, resigned from his position as Lord Justice Clerk , Thomson moved up. In this context he earned the honorary title of Lord Thomson . Thomson gave back his mandate and resigned from the House of Commons. In the by-elections due, John Wheatley held the Labor Party mandate.
