- 73 : After a year-long siege, the Roman Legio X Fretensis under Lucius Flavius Silva Nonius Bassus takes the Jewish rock fortress Masada, defended by 973 Zealots under the leadership of Eleazar ben Ja'ir , and thus ends the Jewish war . They only find seven survivors, two women and five children; all others have chosen to commit suicide or have been killed by their families.
- 1071 : The hungry residents of Bari surrender to the Normans under Robert Guiskard after three years of siege . The Byzantine Empire loses its remaining territory in southern Italy.

- 1796 : Austrian troops under Joseph Philipp Vukasović appear one day late for the battle of Dego , but can cause confusion in the victorious Napoleonic Italian army and hold out against the superior forces with captured cannons for a while before they have to retreat.
